Etude itérative des liens entre utilisabilité et acceptabilité d'un dispositif de saisie et de reconnaissance de l'écriture manuscrite

Abstract : Handwriting input methods on Pocket PC, although testifying high theoretical performances (McKenzie, 2002), are considered neither usable nor acceptable by users. Thus, they prefer virtual keyboard (Ortelli, 2003, Költringer & Grechenig, 2004). Our work aims to understand this lack of acceptability from an ergonomic and cognitive psychology framework. It pursues two goals: firstly, improving the software (ergonomics), and secondly understanding the user (mental efficiency and attitudes). First of all, we conducted a serie of two experiments and a usability testing, whom goals were to improve ergonomics (therefore ils utilisisability) of a handwriting input method (DIGIME, developed in partnership with IRISA, Institut de Recherche en Informatique et Systèmes aléatoires). The cognitive load theory (Sweller, 1991), the illustrations design principles (Mayer, 2001) and the ergonomic criteria (Bastien & Scapin, 2001) were used in these researches. The improvements obtained on ergonomics (study 1) and on the teachware (study 2) were not sufficient to compete with alternative input methods (study 3). Therefore, three more experiments were set up (including a paper prototyping) in order to connect editorial processes, mental effort (Kellogg, 1996) and acceptance (Davis, 1989). Results showed it seemed useless to take participant's attitude into account without considering performance (study 4). Mental efficiency of writing did not explain DIGIME's acceptability, or any other judgement related to this interface (studies 5 and 5 bis). This iterative cycle of design enables us to conclude that the lack of handwriting input methods usability is due to a learning problem. Acceptability decreases, mainly because of virtual keyboards competition, copied on hardware keyboards of whom functioning is well-known by the greater number
