Le quaternaire de la haute vallée de l'Arc : stratigraphie, sédimentologie et chronologie - Alpes françaises

Abstract : The aim of that work is to reconstitute the recent quaternary history of the upper Arc valley Two morphologie and stratigraphie units are visible in the Bessans basin : "the Madeleine collapse" composed of various formations, "the Bessans small basin" which is almost completely filIed with lake sediments making terraces at many different levels. In the North of the basin the moraines of the Villaron indicate that the Arc glacier has stopped moving at this particular point. In the Lanslebourg basin, the Lanslevillard constriction is another example of the same phenomenon. The stratigraphy of the Lanslebourg basin shows some lake sediments laid under a thick fluvial formation (gravels from Lanslebourg) and topped by torrential deposits. In the Bramans-Termignon basin you can see some signs showing that the Doron glacier had stopped moving (at Sollières and Fontaignous) Some deItaic alluvial sediments, topped by the gravels from Sollières and by some torrential alluvial deposits, are supported by the moraines. The description of landforms induced by erosion and accumulation during the recent Quaternary, allows us to draw up the following chronology : 1. The ice stopping in Lanslevillard (Arc) , in the Fontaignous (Doron) and in the Lanslebourg lake. 2. Lake period in the Verney during the recession of the ice front between two periods of ice stopping. 3. Ice stopping of Villaron and the Fontaignous accompanied with gravel deposits. 4. Torrential alluvation, upper and lower terrace composition the collapse of the Madeleine and lake period in Bessans. 5. Finale evolution : the digging of the present bed of the river Arc and the deposit of formations on its edges. Only the last paleogeographic stage probably came during the holocene period, and the four others probably at the end of the wurm recession and during the tardiglacial period.
