Précarité et mobilités des journaliers agricoles uruguayens résidant en ville

Abstract : In Uruguay, a sparsely populated country, the relations town-country have depended, since the conquest, on the extraction of wealth produced by the agricultural activity and on the inhabitants' mobility. During the twentieth century, the changes of management in farms have facilitated the wage system. It was accompanied by a casualized labour which unequally affected the employees. Among them, the day labourers are the most affected. This situation too is subject to change with the election of a government attentive to poverty. The precariousness is characterized by the rotation of the employment and the movement of labour among the farms in order to live. The particularity of the Uruguayan day labourers is to live in town, in suburbs. So, their mobilities fill the need for labour of the farms. Nonetheless, far from being likened to a mechanical adjustment, this mobility answers, on the one hand, strategies of recruitment and labour management by the employers and, on the other hand, an individual and family construction of the movement by the day labourers. What we have to establish is how these strategies lead to the setting up of various forms of mobility. From the study of the spatial practices of the labourers' everyday life living in two cities of the country (Somersault and Las Piedras), this thesis tries to understand how the professional mobilities of the farm labourers lie within their territoriality and how they allow to specify the relations town – country in Uruguay.
