CENTURIATIONS ROMAINES ET DYNAMIQUE DES PARCELLAIRES. UNE APPROCHE DIACHRONIQUE DES FORMES RURALES ET URBAINES DE LA PLAINE CENTRALE DE VENISE (ITALIE)

Abstract : This study is focused on the dynamics of Roman centuriations in the central plain of Venice, an area defined by the lagoon and the Alps to the south and north and the Brenta and Piave rivers to the west and east. This works underlines the interaction between the morphology of the Roman field systems and the impacts of the societies that incorporate and transform these agrarian features. The understanding of environmental constraints is fundamental: it justifies the importance of an approach which takes into account, within the framework of a Geographical Information System (GIS), the combined study of agrarian and geomorphological factors. This work is divided into three parts. The first part consists of the history of research and a presentation of the methodological tools used for the geographical analysis of the Venetian landscape. The second part focuses on the roman centuriations themselves, approached through the morphology of the fields and the geomorphological data. The last part proposes interpretations of the medieval and modern dynamics. It underlines that the centuriated landscapes are resilient objects whose visibility is due to the particular environmental conditions of the venetian plain, but also the specific forms of water management for land improvement during the medieval and modern periods.
