Les aires d'influence des ports de la France: entre réseau et gravitation

Abstract : This doctoral thesis is concerned with the influenceareas of ports : Hinterlands and Forelands. It deals with contemporary debates about the impacts of networks on territories. Inside the specific research topics of ports and maritime transport, the main theories relativize the role of distance on port choice, owing the development of all kinds of networks. Authors give the example of sea carriers that provide door-to-door services at the same price for every land location. In order to measure the scope and the intensity of the spaceless development of sea transport flows we compare French Foreign Trade Flows with spatial interaction model estimations. The main result of this work is that the combination of mass and distance still offers a good explanation of the structure of land flows.
