De l'invention des paysages à la construction des territoires : les terrasses des Ifugaos (Philippines) et des Cévenols (France)

Abstract : All over the world, terrace “terroirs” are invested with the combined dynamics of landscape conservation and alternative economic activities, for example the economic development of local products. These dynamics create significant social and territorial stakes at the local scale. Terrace landscapes and local products support political claims and demands for recognition by local people. Scrutinising the social, territorial and technical organisations, this thesis proposes a comparative approach between two contrasted terrace “terroirs” regions, the Cevennes (Gard) and the Ifugao Province (Philippines). It consists in taking an interest in the determiners, underlying stakes, trajectories and socio-territorial impacts of the activities around terrace landscapes conservation and promotion of local products at the local scale. In spite of similarities between the shapes of these activities in the two regions, the people of Cevennes use these projects in order to serve different individual and collective interests to those of the people of Ifugao. For the people of Cevennes, the economic valorisation of the sweat onion and the terrace landscape, as well as their enhanced value as heritages, is a way of unifying the territory and redefining their specific identity. In contrast, the promotion activities of the rice fields and the tinawon rice that is exported to the USA seem to the different Ifugao groups to be new tools with which to differentiate themselves and reinforce their current social and territorial singularities. This thesis analyses, from a social anthropology point of view, the diversity of strategies set up in both regions. It does this by studying local history, social and spatial organisation, group membership logics, values, representations and local practices reflected in the space, on the terraces and the local products.
