Influence des marqueurs aspectuels sur la construction et l'interprétation de la modalité dans les énoncés en MUST

Abstract : Our research is concerned with the constraints on the meaning of MUST when the modal is combined with aspectual markers. Within a two-tier semantic framework, the conceptual values of HAVE + EN, BE + ING, HAVE BEEN + ING and MUST are described and related to their more abstract linguistic values. We then predict which semantic constructs should be allowed by the association of MUST and aspectual markers. these predictions are checked and refined in the light of the analysis of data. The constraints on the meaning of MUST stemming from the use of aspectual markers are closely related to the time-reference of the modality and of the proposition. However, we claim that incompatibilities result from an, operation which is common to both aspect and modality, and which bars them from coexisting at the same level.
