L'entrepreneur néo-rural et son réseau personnel: une étude exploratoire

Abstract : Even if urban people are more and more encouraged by the authorities in setting up their companies in a rural environmement, a very few researches have been targeted on in-migrant entrepreneurship in rural areas. There is still a lack of adapted support infrastructure. However, this field can offer a new slant in networking litterature. Indeed, this litterature shows that founder's networking activities are a key factor for start-up's success. Moreover, in order to build personal networks, founders should activate their former social and/or professional networks. Those are primarily local. So, this litterature justifies the propensity of entrepreneurs to setting up business where they live. This research aims at understanding the networking practices of a particular type of entrepreneurs : the in-migrant entrepreneurs in rural area. The exploratory and qualitative study in the “Mounts and Mountain of Ardèche” shows the diversity of entrepreneurial processus. It depends on the founder's familiarity with functional context and on the dominant geographical context of setting-up. However, star-up's success (which includes economic performances but also personal satisfaction, perceptions of future and local integration) requires both local and non local networking practices. Those are different. To form a local personal network, are required more “calculative” practices than the simple activation of the former network, which is generally very small and unsuited. Later, local networking pratices become more informal. Opposite, formation of non local network is primarily based on the activation of the former social and/or professional network and the Internet's use. Moreover, for activating, forming and maintening distant relationships, in-migrant entrepreneurs need to reduce the impact of geographical distance by using ICT, a temporary proximity (visits) and, ideally, a cognitive proximity.
