Honneur, chance et destin : ethos traditionnel et modernité dans le milieu malabar de La Réunion

Abstract : This thesis deals with the traditional values and behaviour as they are lived by descendants of Indian immigrants in the Reunion contemporary society. The research consists of pointing out the key concepts of the Indian culture. Integrated during the first socialisation in the family and actualised in the community space. The emphasis is put on the ideas of family, sacrifice, privations, purification, protection, honour, prosperity, order and disorder, auspicious acts, daily taboos, in short, the norms and values which sustain the behaviour, i.e the non visible aspects of the culture, in the religious field for instance, the emphasis is put on the religious motivations and attitudes but not on the description of rituals. After having settled down the fundamental patterns of the Indian culture, these ones are analysed in the interaction with the ideology of the entire Reunion society, firmly engaged in modernity.
