Dépôts d'argent sur des surfaces de nickel : organisation et structure d'un système métal sur métal

Abstract : The deposit of small amount of atoms on well defined surfaces may induce the formation of well organised nanostructures, which can present a long range order. It is the case for example of Co deposit on Au(788) vicinal surface or of Ag deposit on Cu vicinal surfaces. In this context, this thesis presents the study of the Ag/Ni system and more specifically silver adsorption on Ni(111) and Ni(322) surfaces. Silver deposit on the Ni(322) surface induces, after annealing, the formation of facets. The period (which is on the order of some ten of nanometers) and the facets orientations depend strongly on the Ag coverage and on the annealing process. Under particular conditions, the system presents a periodic succession of (211) and (111) facets. The silver, localised on (211) facets, induces a surface reconstruction. This thesis presents the results of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM), Quenched Molecular Dynamics (QMD) simulations and Grazing incidence X-ray Diffraction (GIXD) obtained on this system. In order to deeply understand the system, silver deposits under 2 monolayers were carried out on the nominal surface Ni(111). The growth process seems to depend on the experimental conditions and the STM, GIXD and X-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) results do not converge. Low energy electron diffraction (LEED) measurements have shown a “rotation” of silver plans on the Ni(111) surface above a given annealing temperature. QMD calculations have shown the energetic stability of the surface reconstruction.
