Le centre ville du Caire : émergence d'un centre d'affaires dans un cadre hérité

Abstract : During the second half of the XIXth century, the city of Cairo twofold on the spur of the Khédive Ismaïl. This haussmannian setting received the most part of the main service industry activities until the second world war. Then, this city centre was too narrow for the needs of space. Cairo stretched itself very quickly to many directions. The large number of the locations for the services resulted in an urban multi-centrism. Yet, the city centre is the main location in the Great Cairo. The duality between the two banks of the Nile is also true into the hypercentre between the financial focus and the touristic focus located either near the old city or upon the Corniche. Cairo is not an international place for financial services, but this sector is very dépendent on this part of urban core where the buildings are not with contemporaneous spécification for the offices. Instead of a systematic démolition, this site is preserved. A lot of head offices are rebuilt around the core. The city centre is proving its aptitude for the touristic activities ail the way from the Corniche to the old city.
