L'accompagnement en contexte de formation universitaire: Etude de la direction de mémoire comme facteur de réussite en Master

Abstract : Supervision constitutes one of the characteristics of the structure of the Master degree which is different from the educative structure of the Licence degree. Supervision represents a new pedagogical relationship for the students, and becomes an important variable of achievement in the Master's degree. Student success seems to be linked to the students' ability to become familiar with supervision, that is to say their ability to develop the “professional” skills of being a student (Coulon, 1997), as they gradually discover and understand the new pedagogical contract which is established within the supervisor-student pair. The research presented here seeks to link supervision and student success by analyzing the pedagogical relationship inherent of supervision of the Master degree along three dimensions: scientific, institutional and interpersonal. It has been conducted with semi-directive interviews dealing with the way supervisors and students conceive supervision. The results show differences of perception between supervisors and students about their reciprocal role in each of the three dimensions (scientific, institutional and interpersonal). These gaps in their understanding of supervision create breaches of contract, initiated either by students (in terms of temporary or permanent drop-out), or by supervisors (giving up supervision). The results also show the driving forces of the familiarization process, and the difficulties that students experience doing this process. The research concludes on elements of reflection concerning the conditions which can be set up by universities to make the familiarization process easier for students, and in fine, to offer more favourable conditions for their success.
