Contribution à la caractérisation du type d'occupation des sols à partir des propriétés magnétiques

Abstract : Since the works of Le Borgne in the 1950s, the study of the magnetic properties of soils showed that it could not only report the structure of the subsoil by implementing methods of prospecting, but also allow to identify pedological or anthropological processes affecting the behavior of the different horizons of a soil. Our study joins in the continuity of these works: it is about the use of the magnetic properties of soils to better characterize the cultural processes to which they were able to be subjected, called anthropisation. That is why we studied both pristine and archaeological sites located for four of them in France, against one in Bavaria. The studies in laboratory were completed as much as possible by field measurements. They concerned transposable measurements in prospecting (magnetic susceptibility and viscosity, by frequency dependence or in time-domain), as well as practicable measurements that can only be carried out in laboratory (conversion rate with regard to a maximal susceptibility, thermomagnetic curves and hysteresis loops). The chemical analyses include the measurements of the rate of carbon and organic matters, and these of phosphates and iron, as well as analyses with MEB and electron microprobe. Our work allowed a categorization in three different classes for the modifications of the magnetic signal of soils: (i) a class "horizon A" dominated by the bacterial activity, characterized by a peak at 500°C on thermomagnetic curves, a high enough relative viscosity and a conversion rate relatively low; (ii) a class "heated soils" where the heating results in an absence of peak at 500°C, both strong susceptibility and viscosity, and a relatively strong conversion rate; (iii) a class "metallurgical residues of iron" where, if the values of susceptibility can be very high, the relative viscosity is very low.
