Analyse temps-fréquence et synthèse granulaire des bruits moteur diesel au ralenti: Application pour étude perceptive dans le contexte des scènes auditives.

Abstract : The diesel engine noise at idle is an important factor for the car manifacturers, in order to improve the global car quality. The perception study of the engine noise at idle is important, because this repetitive impulsive sound may cause an auditory discomfort. In this PhD thesis, the diesel engine noise is examined from the point of view of 3 scientific domains: the car acoustics, the time-frequency signal analysis and the auditory perception. The complexe nature of the engine sound is presented, describing the physical origin and the sound signature of the multiple acoustic sources in the engine, as well as the origins of the road and the wind car noise. The focus of the study is on the rhythmical characteristics of the diesel engine noise at idle. The principal contribution in the signal processing domain is the developpement of an original time-frequency analysis and granular synthesis algorithm. This algorithm is based on the analysis of one engine cycle and the extraction of the signal parameters for the granular synthesis from the modulus and the phase of the Gabor transform and its derivatives. This method gives a sparse decomposition of the signal only on a limited number of time-frequency atoms and allows the engine noise synthesis via the periodization of one engine synthesis cycle. An original perception approach is developped, based on a fragmentation of the engine cycle in time-frequency areas (zones) and modification of the time-frequency atoms in this zone. The preference and the categorization auditory tests using synthesis sounds show that the modification of the sound level and the timbre of the zones influence a lot the noise perception. The existence of an important factor in the perception of the engine noise at idle is shown, the rythmic factor. This factor highlights the grouping of the time-frequency zones into auditory streams and suggests, in general, similar perception mecanisms for the impulsive repetitive sounds.
