Relations entre l'hétérogénéité spatiale et la dynamique de renouvellement d'une forêt dense humide sempervirente (Forêt d'Uppangala - Ghâts occidentaux de l'Inde)

Abstract : A structural analysis was carried out from a systematic sample of 3.12 ha and five 2 400 to 4 000 m2 plots, chosen to represent the main structural patterns of the stand. It brought to the fore that variations of the spatial (vertical and horizontal) and floristic structures depend in part on the topographic situation within the plot, as well as on the local history of the stand. Detailed analysis of spatial patterns of trees and spatial (point) processes able to reproduce these patterns, shown that it is necessary to consider alternative mechanisms to the gap regeneration in forest dynamics, particularly for places undisturbed by tree falls since a quite long time. These mechanisms, called substitution processes, imply small openings created by the death of standing trees and involve pre-existent trees instead of the germination of seeds. According to the topographic situation, in steep or gentle slopes, two forms of the process are distinguished. All the results indicate that an accurate model of the functioning of tropical forests can only be achieved by taking into consideration the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the dynamic processes.
