Modélisation du comportement d'ouvrages composites sol-géosynthétique par éléments discrets: application aux ancrages en tranchées en tête de talus

Abstract : Many earthworks associate a soil with polymeric sheets called "geosynthetics". The behaviour of such structures is largely governed by the mechanisms that occur at the soil-geosynthetic interfaces - with large relative displacements - and is characterized by a high deformability. Continuous approaches face major issues for the modelling of such structures. That is why we propose to model them using a discrete element method (DEM). In the DEM, the soil is simulated as a bidimensional particles assembly. It simplifies many problems encountered by the continuous approaches, but causes new problems to be solved. How to choose the micromechanical parameters of the model (contact laws) when the soil is characterised at the macroscopic scale only ? And how to model a geosynthetic sheet with elements dedicated to the modelling of granular materials ? To answer the first question, we propose an approach based on the concept of "macroscopic analogy". Biaxial compression tests are simulated to calibrate the model, to deduce scaling laws, and to select DEM parameters so that the macroscopic behaviour of the soil is correctly simulated. Due to the lack of satisfying answers for the second question, a numerical model is developed specifically to simulate the behaviour of geosynthetics ( DSEM). By coupling the DEM and the DSEM, we can study soil-geosynthetic structures. The case of geosynthetic anchor trenches, for which reliable design methods are required, is studied by this mean. The comparison between the simulations and true-scale pull-out tests shows that the proposed modelling can give good results, both qualitatively and quantitatively. The analysis of the failure mechanisms highlights the shortcomings of current design methods and, finally allows us to propose a set of equations for the design of anchor trenches.
