Utilisations du temps et explications en sciences de la terre par les élèves de lycée : étude dans quelques problèmes géologiques

Abstract : In Earth sciences, fifth or sixth form students don't have the same conception of time as scientists. In order to explain this difference, we analyze the tensions of these sciences, between a functionalist pole and a historical pole. We examine uniformitarianism in its relationship to time; we study the geological explanations and their connection to problematization. For geological problems such as reconstructing the past of an ocean, evolution of a mid-ocean ridge, ophiolites, the origin of life, our epistemological and didactical investigations show that students spontaneously use a basic form of uniformitarianism (analogical uniformitarianism) and « storytelling ». These impede the construction of a complex form of uniformitarianism characterized by the concept of length of time from which phenomena originate
