Contribution à l'étude d'oscillateurs à effet Gunn. Asservissement en fréquence et applications.

Abstract : The discovery in 1963, by JB Gunn, of instabilities in electronic samples of gallium arsenide has enabled the realization of solid state oscillators in the range of centimeter and millimeter waves. These oscillators have several advantages over older generation microwave tubes, klystrons eg : easier supply, improved frequency stability, wide frequency tuning band, reduced manufacturing costs. After a review of the Gunn effect theory, this thesis presents the study of some applications of these oscillators, with particular emphasis on their frequency stability. Thus it describes an assembly for the beat frequency of two oscillators, then another for the frequency control of an oscillator tuned to the length of a waveguide. This assembly is then used for measuring permittivity of various gases introduced into the waveguide. The results are compared with previous measurements made by other means.
