Intégration régionale, développement durable. Quelle économie politique ?

Abstract : This work focuses on three main topics. Considered in the perspective of the French school of regulation economics, the first series of studies, in the field of industrial economics, deals with Japanese production structures, the transferability of the Japanese model and its resilience when it was confronted to the crisis which started in 1989 (Revue Française de Gestion, Chroniques de la SEDEIS, Japon in Extenso, Economie et Humanisme, contribution to several books, one of them published by MacMillan). This has resulted in a typology of Japanese industrial groupings. The second topic is the continuation of the first one in the general framework of international political economy. The role of Japan in the process of East-Asian regional integration is discussed. These studies, developed through the cosupervision of a PhD and several papers (Tiers-Monde, Région et Développement, Mondes en Développement, contribution to several books), empirically define this process (gravity model of trade) and suggest a typology of the conditions of regional integration (regionalisation, regionalism, regional economic integration). From a methodological point of view, these studies establish a link between the quantitative tools of international economics and the concepts of international political economy in a context of liberal institutionalism (regime, regional public good and leadership). The third set of studies, which has been recently carried out (a paper published in VertigO, several talks given in international conferences), considers the concept of sustainable development in the framework of political economy. The first results focus on the characterisation of the jobs offered to "sustainable development economists", the stakes of sustainable development for Southern countries as well as on the compatibility of the current financial regime and the objectives of sustainable development. The prospective studies should first aim at furthering the characterization of the process of intellectual reasoning in political economy. This furthering should lead to a better understanding of two objects: sustainable development and the potential role of Japan as the environmental leader in East-Asia. The bases for this are exposed in this dissertation.
