Topological Constraints and Defects in Spin Ice

Abstract : Spin Ice is a model describing a family of frutrated magnetic compounds (Dysprosium Titanate or Holmium Titanate for example), whose main characteristic is to possess a highly degenerate ground state and thus a finite entropy at zero Kelvin. Because of this geometric frustration, strong toplogical constraints take place in this material. In this thesis, I shall present some of their consequences such as exotic phase transitions under magnetic field or pressure, and the emergence of local excitations similar to magnetic monopoles whose influence is essential in the spin ice dynamics !
