Théories, modes d'emploi : une perspective cognitive sur l'activité théorique dans les sciences empiriques

Abstract : What is a scientic theory ? And how relevant is this notion for a study of scientic knowledge ? This thesis argues that an analysis of the content of theories - conceived of as tools for representing and drawing inferences - should pay attention to the way agents use and understand them, through learning and practice. From this perspective, the form in which theories are displayed, and the context in which they are used, are crucial. This thesis criticizes some classical approaches to the notion of theory, and denes tools of analysis for a study of theorizing ; this method is applied to two case studies - in classical mechanics and in genetics -, which show its fruitfulness.
