L'improvisation en danse : une présence à l'instant

Abstract : Improvisation has an important place in contemporary dance, either to allow the choreographer to invent some gestural material and to compose, or as a work which is built within the spur of the moment, the improvisation performance. This thesis aims at undestanding how the dancer improviser proceeds to create on the spot and how it implies the need for an acute consciousness of his own body as well as his stage surroundings. Within the framework of this study, three artists (Michel Raji, Loïc Touzé and Pascal Quéneau) performed on stage and articipated in various interviews in order to explain and analyse their work. The theoretical frame offered by Gestalt Therapy, thanks to concepts like the theory of the self, the contact-withdrawal cycle, the creative vacuum, makes it possible to analyse the interaction of a person with his environment in a specific context and how he responds to needs. By using this framework, five specifities which could characterize dance improvisation became evident. When improvising, the artist tells on stage his own story through his personal style. He ajusts his work to the context in which he performs. He leans on a compositional structure thought of ahead of time. Being related to the present moment is essential to the immediate dimension of the gesture, as well as to the contemporary, historical and aesthetical dimensions. Finally, the invention of real time movements, the carefulness and the commitment displayed by the improvisers show how much at ease they are with being in awareness
