NOUVELLES CENTRALITÉS ET RECOMPOSITIONS SOCIO-SPATIALES DANS LE GRAND SANAA (YÉMEN)

Abstract : Since the early seventies, the city of Sana'a has known a fast-growing urban expansion allowing unprecedented territorial dynamics. Nowadays, they are mainly staged on the scene of suburban spaces, and even on the fringes of the agglomeration. We thus witness the emergence of suburban centralities that become specific in their capacity to polarise economic activities, and to build up as key-spaces of social life. The present thesis analyses the construction processes and the practice of these emerging centralities, the setting up of which alters the general structure of the Greater Sana'a, as well as identity relations between the urban community and its own space. Originated in private initiatives and urban practices, these new centers currently redefine the actors' strategies as a whole. What's more, new frameworks of urbanity seem to arise: this research is devoted to the specification of their foundations.
