Vers une infographie de l'ambiance sonore urbaine

Abstract : Assuming as necessary that the existing quantitative noise maps must include qualitative data in order to be more effective, this work intends to explore some ways to show how can one represent the qualities of an urban sound situation on a map. Based on the three fundamental characters of the human sound environment (temporality, discrétion, metabolic effects) as well as on the main theoretical approaches of sound quality which hâve been developed so far (sound objects, sound effects, environment, milieu and soundscape, sound atmosphères), this work attempts to see how a map of sound quality may be possible. On this respect, it proposes multiple maps, each one intended to approach some of the problems mentioned above. Thèse maps were carried out during two successive research's stages (the one on paper support and the other on computer support, GIS). Through a brief analytical backward it attempts to see: what could be carried out (introduction of temporality on the map, multiple qualitative aspects ,etc), what turns out to be unrealisable (exhaustive représentation of sound effects or atmosphères (called ambiances in French), as well as the limits of proposed Systems (especially the ones concerning the phenomena's spatial distribution and the individuals' sensitive approach). Therefore, based on thèse expériences, it outlines the first steps of what might be a theoretical and methodological global frame for the représentation of human sound space qualities. Finally, it proposes some new research aspects susceptible to advance the research of the qualitative sound cartography.
