Auto-organisation optique et dynamique dans des lasers à semiconducteurs en présence d'un absorbant saturable

Abstract : The present thesis reports on the experimental study of transverse optical self-organization in lasers with high Fresnel number containing a saturable absorber. In the presence of bistability and modulational instability, localized structures may appear, which are called cavity solitons. They result from an equilibrium between diffraction and nonlinear self-focusing. In the laser regime, the systems described above can emit many beams with diameter around ten microns only. Each beam constitutes a localized structure in the transverse plane, which can be turned on, off and displaced at will. This work is divided into two parts : the continuous regime and the pulsing regimes. In the latter case, the laser could emit cavity light bullets localized both in space and time. The work done was directed towards the search for and the study of the different physical parameters needed for the appearance of bistable and pulsed localized structures. The results presented in this report show for the first time, in a monolithic VCSEL structure with an integrated saturable absorber, a writing-erasure process of a localized structure in the continuous regime. Moreover, they show the steps achieved in order to get close to similar results in the pulsing regime : a cluster of pulsed localized structures has thus been written and erased. By the compacity of the VCSEL and the reconfigurability of the cavity solitons, these results constitute one more step towards the realization of an all-optical data treatment with cavity solitons.
