Analyse biomécanique de la préhension chez la personne âgée : effet des propriétés intrinsèques et extrinsèques de l'obstacle sur les phases du mouvement

Abstract : The aim of the present work is to observe, in a biomechanical analysis, how aging influences reach-to-grasp movements in the presence of an obstacle. To carry out the research, Cyberglove and Vicon optoelectronic system have been jointly used in two experimental protocols to collect data related to the movements of the trunk, of the upper limb, and of the hand during complex grasping tasks. Firstly, in order to observe the influence of environment on the movement, the effect of the intrinsic and extrinsic properties of the obstacle is tested with adult subjects in conditions where the size, the distance, and the position varied. Our results confirm that the presence of an obstacle modifies the kinematics of the “reaching” and “grasp” components. However, the variation of the intrinsic and extrinsic properties of the obstacle has little effect on the space-time parameters which suggests a global control of the movement. Secondly, a population composed of adults and elderly people is compared to consider the effect of age on the manual function in the presence of obstacle. Our results show that the intrinsic and extrinsic properties of the obstacle affect more specifically the movements of elderly people. These differences are characterized by an increase in the movement duration, a modification of joint profiles and an increase in the variability compared to the adults. Specific strategies of elderly people using additional trunk flexion and arm elevation seem to enable them to compensate for their deficit of mobility.
