Tétra- et Poly(aniline) Dopées par des Acides n-Alcanesulfoniques: Structures et Propriétés Electroniques

Abstract : The main goal of the thesis was to study the structural organization and electronic properties of a new family of poly(aniline)-based conductors obtained by protonation of its emeraldine base form with n-alcanesulfonic acids. To facilitate the interpretation of the experimental data of a rather complex nature, parallel studies have been carried out for protonated tetra(aniline) - the shortest model compound mimicking the repeat unit of poly(aniline). Protonated tetra- and poly(aniline) can be considered as ionically self-assembled architectures which show thermotropic liquid crystalline behavior as demonstrated by complementary X-ray Diffraction and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) investigations. These organic conductors show a lamellar-type structure whose peculiar features can be tuned by thermal treatments, length of the dopant alkyl chain and in the case of solid thin films, by the nature of the substrate. The electrical dc-conductivity of PANI[n-alcanesulfonic acids]0.5 free-standing films prepared by casting is high (ca. 100-200 i.e. of the same order of magnitude as in the reference case of poly(aniline) doped by DL-Camphor-10-sulfonic acid (PANI[CSA]0.5). Temperature dependence of the dc-conductivity is interpreted in terms of the so-called "heterogeneous disorder" model in which hopping and metallic contributions are considered. The dcconductivity measurements combined with a sequence of sample annealing procedures, determined on the basis of DSC results, can be considered as an indirect confirmation of the phase transitions in these new organic conductors and clearly show the evolution toward a common behaviour of the whole family studied.
