Typologie des systèmes d'élevage bovin laitier au Maroc en vue d'une analyse de leurs performances

Abstract : A great diversity of cattle rearing practices prevails in Morocco. In order to clarify their consequences on dairy farms technical performances (milk yield and reproduction traits) and economic profitability, a series of follow-up were achieved. This consisted in an application of a systemic approach to dairy farms located in two different regions of the country: Rabat - Salé as a suburban area and the Gharb plain as an irrigated perimeter. The design of a typology of farms has revealed important similarities between regions. There were farms with a beef orientation, and numerous farms which could be qualified as concentrates wasters and who had consequently negative profitability, and also farms who adopted extensive milk production, mainly based on roughages. The last category gathered very few farms which could be considered as dairy specialised units. Paradoxically, it was shown that milk yield per cow was better in suburban zone than in the irrigated plain because of farmers' abilities to purchase additional concentrates. Whenever detailing rearing practices and their consequences, it appears that state farms illustrate a singular way of dairying in Morocco, as the peak of intensification they represent was totally linked to artificial conditions: huge amounts of concentrates per cow and heavy veterinary treatments. In the Ben Slimane rainfed agricultural plateau, this logics of intensive dairy farming had a severe constraint: drought which affects profitability per cow and induces purchases of concentrates as the only way to maintain high milk yields (> 5 000 kg) per cow. Finally, in the suburban area, it has been shown that milk production relies mainly on concentrates purchases, as farms are generally suffering from limited forage area. Consequences on milk quality are dramatic, as fat content does not respect normal value of 35 g/kg in two out of five farms. On another hand, milk hygienic quality can be described as very poor in all the studied farms. All together, these conclusions dictate adapted development measures for each of the identified groups, with a particular accent on equilibrated rations even with high levels of concentrates. This would be compulsory to improve the average milk yield per cow and to maintain profitable farms
