L'appropriation des TIC par les collégiens dans les sphères familières et scolaires

Abstract : Adolescents are frequently depicted as being familiar with ICTs, accustomed to their use since their early childhood, and remarkably expert at handling them. The present dissertation aims at understanding, beyond the common-sense of an environment in which today's young people would be immersed, the appropriation process of computers by young adolescents. The proposed conceptual framework articulates the benefits of the sociology of aptitudes of Bernard Lahire, which makes possible to show the multiplicity of the domains of appropriation, as well as the concepts of usage and instrument schemes, developed by the instrumental approach of Pierre Rabardel, which permits to characterize what is incorporated in the use of computing tools and to show the instrumental nature of embodied logics of action. The thesis shows that the development of the uses and of the set of technical skills is closely connected to the self-construction and to the forms of adolescent sociability, but that the diversity of the environments where the computing tools are used leads to a plurality of the forms of appropriation, which is a source of inter-personal differentiation and of internal heterogeneity of the incorporated schemes of use. The generational appropriation, recreational and pragmatic, leads to a practical familiarization allowing the incorporation of local know-how; the family appropriation which involves the passing on of what we define here as a computing capital leads to an inter-individual variability of the aptitudes for uses; whereas the school appropriation, in contrast with the uses familiar to the pupils, leads to a conscious and structured manipulation creating an intra-individual variability of the schemes of use.
