L'écriture expressive et ses effets :
Approche cognitivo-émotionnelle

Abstract : Expressive writing concerns the evocation of positive and negative events by reporting emotions associated to these events. The literature has shown that 3 to 4 disclosure sessions of 15-20 minutes are sufficient for inducing important emotional regulations in the writer. This thesis comprises a review of the different contexts of use of expressive writing, its effects on the psychological and physical well-being of the writers and of the functional models proposed to explain this written practice. This assessment also encompasses some critical analyses that have questioned the efficacy of this technique. The studies carried out during the thesis have shown that according to their emotional characteristics (anxiety, communication and writing apprehension, procrastination, perfectionism and alexithymia), writers differently refer to positive and negative events. These writers use neither the same amount of emotional lexicon of positive and negative valence nor the same emotions. In order to analyze the content of the writings, a software for counting emotional lexicon was specifically designed (EMOTAIX-Tropes). This tool allows for the identification of about 5000 words related to various categories of emotions, humors and affects. The researches have also shown that a unique session of expressive writing was sufficient to change the level of state-anxiety. According to the positive or negative nature of their experience, anxiety either increases or decreases among writers. This phenomenon was more salient among the writers expressing writing apprehension.
