Abstract : This thesis work has been undertaken in the field of wireless local area networks. The objective is to propose an automatic planning strategy which looks for one or more configurations of the access points (AP) regarding various quality of service constraints. The quality of such a strategy depends mainly on the propagation prediction model considered.

The first part of this work was thus considering the development and validation of an original propagation prediction model: the adaptive Multi-Resolution Fourier Domain ParFlow (MR-FDPF) model.
The definition of a calibration stage enabled us to define adequate parameter settings for this model for standard buildings, guaranteeing a mean squared error between the predictions and the measurements of less than 5 dB.

The second part of this work concentrated on the wLAN planning problem. Criteria related to radio coverage, interference minimization, bandwidth optimization and improvement of localization services were proposed.
Two optimization heuristics based on a Tabu algorithm were developed: a mono-objective and a multiobjective one. This work highlighted the advantages of the multiobjective approach because it makes it possible to obtain several solutions each one representing a different trade-off between the criteria optimized. In fact, the mono-objective heuristic only gives one choice to the deployment engineer and if this solution doesn't suits him, the whole research has to be run again with other criteria weightings. In contrast, with the multiobjective approach, the choice of the solution to be deployed is done a posteriori in a set of good solutions.
