Abstract : The chapter 1 discusses the history of the concept of archaeological stratigraphy, until the present notions founded on the axiomatization introduced by Edward Harris in 1979. Chapter 2 reexamines these notions, in order to formalize them. Chapter 3 suggests a formalisation using simple mathematical tools, and proposes an algorithm in order to get automatically a stratigraphic diagram (Harris Matrix), including the concept of uncertainty. This process forms part of the broader concept of "stratigraphic information system" (chapter 4). Finally chapter 5 evokes, from a theoretical and practical point of view, the statute of stratigraphic information.
Volume 2 presents the computer tools resulting from this work: the module of creation of stratigraphic diagrams (Le Stratifiant), with one exemple of stratigraphic database (Stratibase).
