Mémoire présenté en vue de l'obtention de l'Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches

Abstract : Arc volcanism displays a wide range of eruptive styles, from effusive dome-growths to highly explosive eruptions such as surges or Plinian events. The impact of either eruption types in terms of volcanic risks for the surrounding populations is dramatically different. Yet, we are today incapable of predicting either the date or the style of an imminent event, mainly because of the lack of basic understandings of the physicochemical processes that lead to either effusive or explosive eruptions. The research work presented here aims at providing information on the pre- and syn-eruptive processes that are the conditions of magma storage in the reservoir and ascent in the volcanic conduit. The involved processes are mainly volatile degassing, microlite crystallization and fragmentation of silica-rich magmas, which have been investigated here through a coupled study of the natural volcanic tephra and experimentation performed under relevant magmatic conditions.
