Etude d'un capteur capacitif différentiel pour la détection de pluie

Abstract : This work deals with a differential capacitive rain sensor with protected electrodes. Initially, electrical properties of sensor materials are experimentally determined. By means of theoretical considerations, semi-empirical expressions have been established which quantify the frequency [10^2to 10^5Hz] and the temperature [−40 to +80°C] dependence of the dielectric permittivities which are necessary for the capacitance calculations. The sensor is then dimensioned utilizing numerical simulation (finite element method) and manufactured by applying various processes for depositing the electrodes. Two electrode geometries are studied: linear and interdigital electrodes. Sensor sensitivity to water is evaluated by numerical simulation (water film and variable volume drops) followed by experimental validation. Finally, the temperature influence on sensor performance is studied: the effects of thermal expansion properties of the materials and of dielectric permittivity variations are successively discussed. The effectiveness of the differential mode against temperature influence is then evaluated.
