Modélisation de la formation et de l'oxydation des suies dans un moteur automobile

Abstract : This work deals with soot formation and oxidation modelling. The objective is to optimize the development of thermic engines to reduce soot particle emissions. To reach this goal, a soot model was developed and coupled to a combustion model in a 3D aerothermic code. The soot model target is to reproduce the particle size distribution with a reasonable accuracy. Therefore, a sectional method was used and improved in order to satisfy to industrial criteria in terms of computational time and memory load. In a first step, a detailed kinetic mechanism for oxidation of model engine fuels was developed and validated in a large range of pressure and experimental configurations. This mechanism allows the modelling of aromatic compounds formation in the gas phase: initial step of the soot model. If the use of detailed chemistry is necessary to satisfy accuracy demands, it requires tabulation techniques for the soot chemistry in order not to recalculate the chemical terms locally, which is very expensive in computational time. Three types of tables, implying different couplings to the combustion model, were proposed. The integration of the soot model into STAR-CD™ required the implementation of the generated tables, the soot model equations and the coupling of the soot model to the combustion model. A first validation was performed with fixed data within the tables in order to be free from the coupling hypothesis made. In a second step, the combustion simulation of a full-load conventional engine was performed. The results obtained were sensible, so a last validation was carried out and based on the results of a set of experimental measurements (LII technique) from an optical engine under partial-load.
