Vers une physique statistique du pliage et du froissage de structures élastiques

Abstract : This dissertation deals with the geometrical, mechanical and statistical properties of fold formation in constrained elastic structures. We focused our attention on the case of an elastic rod, unidimensional object, confined in a two dimensional space. In this case, there is a strong interaction between the geometrical constraint of self-avoidance and the mechanical properties of the rod. After a numerical study of the formation and evolution of the very first folds, we perform a sampling of the energetical landscape that shows the emergence of a Boltzmann-like measure when the intensity of compaction is increased. Inspired by Edwards' theory of powders, we develop a statistical theory that predicts the complete phase diagram of the confined elastic rod.
