L'université, l'Eglise et l'Etat dans les sermons du cardinal Eudes de Châteauroux (1190 ? - 1273)

Université Lumière Lyon 2, octobre 2001

Abstract : Cardinal Eudes de Châteauroux (1190 ? - 1273) is one of the most prolific orator and exegete of the thirteenth century (about 1100 sermons assigned to him by manuscripts, mostly copied in his curial scriptorium). His work has been transmitted by two ways. First, written texts, so that manuscript tradition had to be explained, in order to select and transcribe a chosen corpus of 65 sermons. On the other side, this activity is reflected through contemporary (recorded, narrative, liturgical, hagiographical, and iconographical) sources, by which the discourses may be put in their context, tentatively dated, and the social and ideological impact of this activity - purely liturgical at the beginning - be estimated. Texts studied in this work focus on three major themes, strictly linked to the author's career : University, Church and State. The tradidionnal duet Church-State, closely related to the high Middle Ages, left place to this trilogy during the thirteenth century, as the national States were growing. Preaching, now a scholastic speciality, may be seen as one feature of State-building from an ideological point of view. States have at their turn promoted the universities. Capetian kings especially liked the sermons which were made there. In short, political oratory profoundly changed the old genre of occasionnal or " de casibus " sermons, knowing how to interpret contemporary events at the light of the Bible, as new exegetic methods had been set, and the Princes needed more than ever to take counsel with graduate scholars.
