Les Français d'Algérie : socio-histoire d'une identité

Abstract : Created from the willingness of France, the « Français d'Algérie” population encompasses in a single French identity a variety of individuals. With the Algerian independence, their very existence is questioned. The trauma caused by the disappearance of their environment, the loss of their land, and the painful repatriation, suddenly made the “Français d'Algérie” become aware of their existence as a community. Facing a hostile environment, those who arrived in the mainland and became the “Pieds-Noirs” undertook a consolidation of their own collective identity. This identity, brought into awareness during the tragedy, was asserted by the re-appropriation of the community origins, through a strong memory mobilization. In spite of some reorientations of France with respect to its history, the “pieds-noirs” are still not considered as fully legitimate. This lack of recognition is responsible for an identity crystallisation.
