Abstract : Our research concerns models of plant growth and the development of mathematical methods to study these models. If the final objectives are application-driven and concern optimization and control of crops, they imply a deep understanding of the gene x environment interactions.
We propose a mathematical methodology to explore these interactions based on the study of the dynamic system of plant growth.
This study relies on the individual-based GreenLab model, combining the description of both plant structure and function.
Plant architecture appears as the complex result of the gene x environment interactions, and we show how the analysis of architecture may help bridge the gap from gene to phenotype. It implies:
- the description of the dynamic development of plant stuctures,
- the derivation of the functional equations of plant growth and of interations between function and developemnt,
- the estimation of model parameters from architectural data.
Once the gene x environment model hase been identified, it becomes possible to implement optimization and optimal control methods on real issues.
