Caractérisation et modélisation des propriétés optiques et colorimétriques des céramiques lustrées

Abstract : Lusters are a kind of ceramics produced in the Mediterranean basin between the 8th and 16th century. The potters of that time managed to obtain at the surface of these ceramics a structure based on nanoparticles of noble metal (copper and/or silver). This structure leads to astonishing colorimetric properties. Indeed, the colour of these ceramics changes with respect to the direction under which they are seen. The aim of the research project whose results are presented here was to characterize and model these optical effects.

Amongst the phenomena leading to the observed effects are plasmon absorption, interferences and diffusion. Moreover, interference effects occurring away from the specular direction were shown. The model needed to first calculated those interference effects and then to integrate all the phenomena that occur at different scale and which are describe using various theories. The spectra obtained using the model reproduce the optical effect measured.

Finally, the characterization process performed on more than 200 samples coming from the main production centres and covering the all period of production gives for the first time a overall view of the production of lustred ceramics and allow to draw some hypothesis concerning the evolution of the technique and the know how of the potters of that time.
