Elaboration d'une méthode différentielle pour l'étude de fibres optiques microstructurées

Abstract : This PhD manuscript deals with the development of a numerical method in order to study the propagation of the light by objects with cylindrical shape. This document is split into two parts.
The first part introduces basis equations of the last version of the differential method (“fast Fourier factorization” method) written in cylindrical coordinates. Several tests successfully validate this theory in the case of conical diffraction, then in the particular case of the classical diffraction (TM and TE). In the same time, a new numerical method is proposed which permits to modelize the diffraction of light by an anisotropic circular cylinder. This method has been implemented and successfully validated.
The second part is essentially devoted to the modelling of microstructured optical fibers in order to study leaky modes which propagate in such optical devices. A formalism related to the used method is written taking into account the opto-geometric symmetrical properties of this kind of waveguides. The very satisfaying results particularly show that the differential method belongs to the group of numerical method which can compute with accuracy both the real part and the imaginary part (losses) of the effective index of studied modes.
The differential method presents the advantage to consider arbitrary cross section diffracting devices (inclusions in the case of microstructured optical fibers). This method also permits to study objets filled with inhomogeneous and/or anisotropic media. Our recent works particularly focus on “AntiResonant Reflecting Optical Waveguide” microstructured optical fibers. Comparisons between numerical results and experimental measurements are encouraging.
