AUTO-ASSEMBLAGES REVERSIBLES PH-SENSIBLES DE COPOLYMERES AMPHIPHILES EN MILIEU AQUEUX

Abstract : The self assembly in aqueous solution of copolymers formed by polystyrene (hydrophobic) and poly(acrylic acid)(hydrophilic and polyelectrolyte) is well known and described in the litterature. They lead to the formation of «frozen» aggregates (unable to dissociate and not sensitives to various stimuli like pH). The goal of this worh was to obtain a pH-sensitive and reversible agreagtion for based PS and PAA
The Nitroxide-Mediated Poymerization allowed us to synthesize classical di-blocks PS-b-PAA but also an original type of copolymers formes by a pure PAA block and a gradient block PS-grad-PAA. We have demonstrated the passage from frozen aggregates, for classical copolymres PS-b-PAA, to dynamic micelles and a pH-sensitive and reversible micellization for copolymres based on a gradient composition PS-grad-PAA.
These new types of copolymers were also chemically grafted to silicium surfaces water. A pH sensitive and reversible behavior was observed, similar to that we have shown in aqueous solution. At low pH, a rough surface is formed due to the presence of agregates whereas at high pH a smooth hydrophilic surface is obtrained.
These results, for gradient copolymers in solution or grafted to an inorganic surface, show the extreme complexity of the behavior of this new type of amphiphilic copolymers and open the way to many applications such as ecapsulation ,carrier and delivery of molecules or the formation of bio-captors and bio-receivers.
