Faire le mot et le son: une étude sur l'art de trobar entre 1180 et 1240

Abstract : At the end of the 11th century, courtly love appeared in the south of France with the first known troubadour, Guillaume IX of Aquitaine. The central image of courtly love is the lover singing his poems to a damsel whose love must be conquered. In order to be remembered, the troubadour must move his listener and convince her of the purity of his sentiments. A troubadour's worth was determined by his subtlety, his ability to combine word and sound, and not by the themes he treated in his songs, which were always the same. In order to accomplish this, he had to use and master the textual and melodic parameters at his disposal to develop a refined song. The preliminary study of the expressions of the troubadours and the faire los motz e•l so in medieval literature of the 12th and 13th centuries permits us to see how the troubadour uses his art to create songs. The study of this savoir-faire will start with an analysis of the central corpus of the history of the troubadours. We will study ten troubadours from this pivotal period. Only between one and four songs with intact melodies remain. This study will take two principal directions: the methods of development of the musical and literary text, as well as the internal processes used to highlight the text. In the context of the oral transmission of knowledge we will see how the troubadours we able to conceive of and transmit these songs without writing them down and how the melody is conceived in the same manner as the text. The thesis, therefore develops an approach to the poetic conditions and rhetorical forms in the text inherent to the art of the troubadours, which permit us to deepen our knowledge of the subtle links summed up in the famous expression, “faire le mot et le son.”
