Une analyse empirique du rôle de l'éducation dans le processus individuel de migration rurale-urbaine en Thaïlande

Abstract : Rural-to-urban migration in Thailand shows some wondering characteristics regarding to related traditional economic theory. We observe that even if urban workers' income increases since more than thirty years, rural-to-urban migration flows remain low despite high intersectorial income gaps. This observation, on which relies our reasonning, leads us to propose an approach that focuses on the fact that rural labor force's characteristics do not fit with the needs of urban firms. Thailand economic development that relies partly on capitalistic industry using educated labor force induces a well educated labor demand. This could explain why migrations flows are relatively low. Focusing on the education factor, and using traditionnal probabilistic models' framework, we develop a migration model that we believe is able to describe the mechanisms that manage the Thai labor market. This model is a useful tool for explaining the phenomenon we observe. In order to illustrate our theory we propose an econometric estimation of the migration decision process by using a Thai micro database. The results confirm our expectations and show that if migration decisions are effectively influenced by income gaps, the education factor entails an auto selection process among rural workers that softens the willingness to migrate.
