Recherche de variables contribuant à l'organisation d'un paysage de moyenne montagne : le cas des Hautes Chaumes du Forez

Abstract : This research is in line with the number of studies conducted in the Hautes Chaumes area in the Monts du Forez. Our goal was to develop an approach that would help explain the extent to which physical variables (i.e. slope, aspect, contour) and anthropic factors (agricultural practices) restrict the distribution of vegetative cover. A reflection on the concept of landscape led us to the use of PEGASE. This software applies a divisive multivariate approach based on the principles of Information. The usefulness of PEGASE has already been attested by previous applications, but in our work we innovated on traditional uses of the method in different manners. Firstly, this is the first time that PEGASE has been used with large databases (PEGASE meta-databases). This led us to the development of two supplementary tools associated with PEGASE that facilitate and automate database management. In addition to constructing the databases, Asc2Peg allows PEGASE to be used in G.I.S. format because it runs from ESRI ASCII Grid exchange files. Additionally, there are numerous variables that can potentially affect the distribution of vegetation, one aspect of our work being to identify them. In parallel, we reviewed and standardized the mathematic formulation of various geomorphometric indices derivatives of Digital Terrain Models (slope, aspect, contour, etc.). Finally, our methodology is based on a multi-scale approach, taking into account geographic extent and resolution, and led us to identify a set of variables that we describe as dominant . Our research also showed that PEGASE could be a potentially useful mapping tool when applied to automatic classification of satellite imagery.
