la confiance chez les femmes primipares de la grossesse au post-partum

Abstract : Women's confidence in the adventure of birth has been mostly investigated as absence of anxiety. Primiparas' mental security is key to establishing the relationship between mother and child which starts before the birth. Thus it is interesting to look at the factors affecting this relationship, and how to strengthen it.
This exploratory, qualitative longitudinal study is based on three interviews with 19 women at the early stage of their pregnancy, at the end of their pregnancy, and after the birth. A subjective assessment carried out by women with the help of an analogical scale has enabled the monitoring of their serenity and of various forms of confidence: in themselves, in their ability to be a mother, in their babies, and in the various stakeholders involved in the birth. Their positive experience of maternity support an enhanced self-esteem, and they have been able to bond with their children. Women's needs, expectations and gaps helped understand what specialists could bring to primiparas in the process of opening up body and mind. The study of birth's hormonal physiology, including the role of ocytocin, highlights women's need for emotional and physical support in order to create the atmosphere of trust and confidence needed to establish the bond between mother and child. Confidence is a dynamic process. Women enhance their confidence when they realise that they have the resources needed to give birth and take care of their child.
