La mort chez les Bituriges Cubes. Approches archéologiques et données biologiques d'une cité de Gaule romaine

Abstract : The objective of our research is to characterize the funerary practices and the behaviors of the alive populations with respect to the dead ones : treatment and deposit of the body, funerary furniture, funerary architecture but also management of funerary spaces, topography and dynamics of the funerary occupation.
For that, we established a database indexing more than 400 sites. Integrated into a SIG, it enabled us to observe the distribution of the funerary sites on the territory. The two most remarkable points are the difference in establishment between the funerary sites and the other settlements and the difference between the graveyards of the Empire and those of late Antiquity.
After having selected five sites, we undertook an analysis of more than 1200 burials while associating archaeological and anthropological data to bring new elements of reflexions to the comprehension of the Gallo-Roman funerary practices. In the case of cremation, we are more particularly interested in the gestures of collection and storage of the cremated bones. For the burials, we especially focus our attention on the contributions of the biological data to the definition of the family or social regroupings.
The whole of these data underlines the existence of local facies within the civitas and highlights the importance of the archaeological context in which the necropolis stands for the characterization of the funerary gestures fits.
