ETUDE IN SITU, PAR COMBINAISON DE TECHNIQUES D'IMAGERIE SYNCHROTRON (RADIOGRAPHIE X / TOPOGRAPHIE X), DE LA FORMATION DE LA MICROSTRUCTURE DE SOLIDIFICATION D'ALLIAGES METALLIQUES

Abstract : The combined (radiography and diffraction) synchrotron X-ray imaging set-up developed during my thesis allows the in situ and real-time investigation of the complex dynamic phenomena involved in the growth of metallic alloys. Thanks to this set-up, we could characterize the TGZM (Temperature Gradient Zone Melting) process and show its effect on the solidification microstructure. We were also able to quantify the alloy composition evolution in both phases (liquid and solid) during the growth process. We showed how it is possible to reconstruct 3D-rendering of highly perfect dendrites (before their coarsening) using the 2D diffracted images and results of the dynamical theory of diffraction.
We could observe and quantify mechanical phenomena like rotation or bending of the dendritic microstructure. Finally, we studied stress and strain emerging within the microstructure simultaneously with the eutectic phase solidification.
