Contributions en segmentation statistique d'images et reconnaissance de formes 2D

Abstract : This dissertation follows 9 years of my research activities, including 7 years as an assistant professor at the École Centrale Marseille and as a researcher into the Multidimensional Signal Processing Group of Institut Fresnel (CNRS UMR 6133). Works which I present explore some aspects of the statistical segmentation of images for applications in space imagery and the invariant description of 2D shapes for object recognition in video imagery. More precisely, the first part of the manuscript shows several extensions of the Hidden Markov Chain (HMC) model. First, these extensions deal with modifications of observed data with the vectorial HMC model and hidden data with the fuzzy HMC model. Second, we propose some modifications to the chain topology -and then on the independence assumptions the model relies on-, leading to the higher-order HMC and pairwise HMC models. These models are evaluated in the frame of earth observation, with Synthetic Aperture Radar image segmentation and bi-dates change detection applications for disaster management. The second part is devoted to 2D shape recognition, with geometrical invariance as central topic. In a first stage, we propose new complete families of similarity-based invariant descriptors from Fourier-Mellin transform and from complex moments, with application to gray-level object database indexing. Then, our works turned to the detection of objects with the incorporation of a shape invariant a priori into the snakes model and the tracking of a selected object in color video by means of a non Gaussian mixture model of object colors. This dissertation ends with the prospects of my research, especially those combining image segmentation with shape recognition, in the framework of the very high resolution images which allow sub-metric resolutions for both radar and optical data.
