Mutations géomorphologiques récentes du Rône aval, Recherches en vue de la restauration hydraulique et de la gestion des crues

Abstract : The flood of the Rhone river in December 2003 (11 500 m3 s-1), located downstream Beaucaire, had a water line 30 to 60 cm higher than that the reference flood of May 1856 (11 640 m3 s-1 ). This recent event caused overflows on the left bank of the Rhone between Beaucaire and Arles and breaches on the right bank of the Petit Rhone, with considerable damages for flooded areas. This phenomenon can be interpreted as a loss of flood flow capacity, due to geomorphological changes in the channel since the end of XIXth century.
In order to study this hypothesis, this thesis is built in three parts. In the first one, we analyze the factors influencing morphogenesis, throughout the catchment area and locally (changes in solid discharge, embankments...), from on a synthesis of historical and published data. In the second part, we look at the 2D changes of land use, then to 3D changes in the plain topography and the channel bathymetry since 150 years. Then we quantify erosion and sedimentary storage. These results are discussed and linked with the general forcing and the local constraints. An analysis of the Petit Rhône breaches allow a methodological improve for determining the area's most susceptible to rupture. The third part is focused on the evolution of solid flows since 150 years : modelisation and calculation of potentially reworked bottom sediment load in 1876 and 2006, estimation of suspended load transit and impact of human river management on their capture or removal from the calibration of aDcp data (validation of the method is presented).
